In Warsaw, the public company responsible for the city’s transport network is ZTM. You can use buses, trams, or the subway (metro), all of which accept the same tickets. Tickets are available from automatic machines located on the streets, at bus stops, and metro stations, as well as inside buses and trams. Note that some machines accept only card payments, some only cash, and others both. Bus and tram drivers do not sell tickets. You must purchase a ticket before boarding the bus (or immediately upon entering if there is a ticket machine on board) and validate it inside the bus at a yellow validator right after boarding (tickets bought inside buses may already be validated). Mobile apps for buying transport tickets are also available. For navigation, Google Maps offers detailed directions and transfer information, proving to be very reliable.
The most popular tickets include:
If you prefer not to worry about tickets and wish to travel via public transport, you can purchase a 72-hour ticket for 36 PLN, which allows you to use any mode of transport.
The metro operates from 5 AM until 1 AM from Sunday to Thursday, and until 3 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. Night-time transportation is provided by night buses and private transportation services.
Public transport is generally very safe; however, as with anywhere, it’s wise to keep an eye on your personal belongings.
